text apps that makes you g33k

Here in this blog post, I’m gonna take you to the world of text, the world of console. i.e., Command Linux Interface – CLI world.

I love to use CLI apps…

  • because, it is very fast – an advanced command line interface user would be able to get something done faster then an advance GUI user.
  • because, it takes low resources – works great on low machines
  • and because, it makes me g33k 😉

Here are some of the popular CLIs. And what you can’t do in CLI is nothing. You can do everything like chat with friends, browsing, listen to songs, watch videos, play games, burn CDs, edit images and use it as an IDE. Yes, I’m talking about console mode. lets take a look.

$ chatting…

centericq is a popular ICQ/Yahoo!/AIM/IRC/MSN/Jabber/GaduGadu/RSS/LiveJournal Client

$ browsing…

elinks is a advanced text-mode web browser. browsing is very fast, & keyboard shortcuts are handy. If you have gpm installed you can use mouse to navigate. (in case you are using elinks in ttys)

$ download managers & torrent downloading…

wget is king of all download manager. It is a Network utility to retrieve files from the WWW. wget has a great number of options that no download manager has it.

Another good & very fast download manager is axel .It uses chunk downloading ( multi-threaded downloading ).

And rtorrent, bittorrent are good BitTorrent client

$ irc client…

irssi – says, client of the future. Really it is.

$ play songs…

mp3blaster, mplayer, mpg321 are command line mp3 players

abhinay@gentoo ~ $ mplayer Songs/Munna/Manasa.mp3

$ watch videos…

It is really a wonder. I really got shocked when i saw videos playing in console. Ofcourse, the video ‘ll be played in black & white mode.

You need to enable framebuffer support in kernel to play videos in console. I use gentoo. Gentoo users can fallow this wiki to configure framebuffer. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Framebuffer_Support

$ blank, burn, copy cd/dvds…

i just can say , use bashburn.

$ play games…

moon-buggy is the game

$ image editing…

imagemagick is a collection of tools and libraries for many image formats.

you can convert image format, resize picture, make it transparent, sharp image, blur image ………… more.

USAGE: http://www.imagemagick.org/script/convert.php
$ decode, encode (compress) videos… ffmpeg – Documentation: http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg-doc.html

link: http://smorgasbord.net/convert_video_linux

$ and there are many many text apps that i didn’t mentioned…

Newbies read man pages for usage.

    UNIX Programming by Yashwanth Kanitkar is a good book for beginners.
    And, I suggest you to start learning python language which i love very most.
