J for Smile – Microsoft Outlook Incompatible Smileys
Did you notice J in your mails where it should be a smiley?
It shows ‘J’ here where it should be a smiley as shown in above screenshot.
Today evening I wrote a JavaScript code to replace this ‘J’ with the happy smiley from Yahoo Emoticons (My Favorite Smiley Theme). This script is available to everybody to use and very easy to install in your browser (~ Firefox 3.6 with Greasemonkey addon and ~ Google Chrome).
So, why it’s showing J instead of a smiley? Microsoft Outlook replaces ๐ with it’s J character of Wingdings font. It’s a proprietary font by Microsoft – as you expected Linux, Mac OS X and any other Operating System doesn’t have this font by default. If you don’t have this font, then you’ll see J.
If you are using Google Chrome, right click on the J letter and click on Inspect Element. This is how it looks in html code. As you can see this tag uses Wingdings font-family.

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:Wingdings;color:#1F497D">J</span>

J for Smile userscript that I wrote will replace this J with the corresponding Yahoo Emoticons.
Other Smileys
J for ๐ – Happy
K for ๐ – Sad
L for ๐ – Straight Face
How to Install?
Go to this link – http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/83513 and click on Install. Should work in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.
